Joseph Havlat is an Australian pianist and composer from Hobart, now based in London. As a soloist and chamber musician he performs music from the very new to the very old, appearing in major venues across the UK, Europe, the Americas, Japan and Australia, including Wigmore Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall and King’s Place.
A leading interpreter of contemporary music, Joseph has worked with composers including Thomas Adès, John Adams, Hans Abrahamsen, Gerald Barry and Sir Harrison Birtwistle, and has performed with artists such as James Ehnes and Steven Isserlis. He is also a member of the LSO Percussion Ensemble, featuring on an LSO Live release that includes the premiere recording of John Adams’ two-piano work Roll Over Beethoven.
Joseph studied at the Royal Academy of Music with Joanna MacGregor, graduating with distinction, and now teaches piano there. As a composer, his music often draws on the sounds of the natural world, shaped by the edges of modern life. He also likes ferns.
