Adrian Brendel is one of the most versatile and distinctive cellists of his generation, performing worldwide as a soloist, chamber musician and teacher. Rooted in the central European tradition, he combines a deep love of the classical repertoire with an ongoing commitment to contemporary music and collaboration.
He has recorded widely for labels including Philips, Hyperion, ECM New Series, NMC and BIS. Highlights include the complete Beethoven works for cello and piano with his father Alfred Brendel, and a collection of music written for him through a long creative partnership with Sir Harrison Birtwistle. Adrian is a regular guest at major European festivals and has appeared as soloist with orchestras such as the Philharmonia, Academy of St Martin in the Fields and the RSNO, as well as in recital with artists including Imogen Cooper and Till Fellner.
Alongside performance, Adrian holds artistic leadership roles including Artistic Director of Bath Bachfest & Mozartfest (from 2025), Co-Artistic Director of the Nash Ensemble (from 2025), and Founder of the Tree of Strings Foundation (from 2026). He is also an Honorary Member of the Royal Academy of Music, where he gives masterclasses as a guest professor.
